Eczema and Allergies - What Your Doc Doesn't Know...

Hey guys,

Wilding here, I wanted to shoot this quick video about allergies today and the reason I'm indoors is because it's kinda poopy, today, check it out. It's like raining and cold and kinda miserable. Well it never really gets cold in Bangkok but anyway. So I've been getting a lot of question on email about allergies. People want to know all kinds of things but it boils down to one big general misconception thats out there and that is that allergies in fact cause eczema.

This is completely false - with a little caveat first of all.

Now there's a big difference between a food intolerance and an allergy.A real allergy. A real allergy is like a shellfish allergy which you have a genetic predisposition for okay. Now most allergies and this is the big problem, most doctors call any kind of allergy an allergy whether it's a food intolerance or a real allergy like a shellfish allergy. Those are completely different things okay.

There is also a whole other different category of foods which we are just not evolutionarily adapted to eat which are things like grains, processed foods, sugar and dairy.

So this big misconception that eczema is caused by food allergies is ridiculous. For example you'll go to the doctor and the doctor will say: "We need to do an allergy test"

Which is what many of my students tell me they get - the RAST allergy test. R.A.S.T. And then this test will come back positive for all kinds of crazy stuff like bananas, nuts tomatoes, grass, pollens, dust, all kinds of things. And then they'll ask me:

"Well Wilding, what must I do? Must I avoid all these foods and then my eczema will just magically disappear?"

And my answer is always: "No."

I mean I wish that was the case but from my experience that's just not how things work. You know, when I was a kid I had the same thing done I had a bunch of allergy tests done and my doctors were like: "Look you're allergic to like over 20 different things, you need to avoid all these foods"

And so I did exactly that. I did what my doctor told me and I avoided all those foods and I literally ate a diet of like vegetables, fish and rice for years and it was terrible. And while it did help my allergies and skin for a while, it all came back really quickly too.

So this is not what I recommend for you okay.

Eczema is an inflammation related auto immune disorder okay. So what that means is that the rashes that appear on your skin are caused because you have a very high level of inflammation in your body for a number of reasons.

So the fact that if you just eliminated these so called allergic foods that's not going to do anything. You need to go a hell of a lot deeper and you need to look at the foods in your diet that we are just not evolved to eat and eliminate those. And that will do a lot more for your inflammation levels than just eliminating one or two so called problem foods.

You need to get rid of processed foods, you need to get rid of sugar, you need to get rid of dairy and you need to get rid of most of all grains which is probably the most difficult one.

And if you do that you're going to see a massive reduction in your inflammation levels and of course in your skin as your eczema is going to get a lot better. It's a lot more complicated that that, but that's just the general overview of the situation. And then, interestingly, you're going to go to your doctor after a few months of eating this way and have that same allergy test done and you're going to come back positive for almost nothing and your doctor is not going to be able to explain why. Because from what they're taught and understand, this is not the way that allergies work.

So it's like, okay the reason why our body behaves this way and it just sees basic foods like harmless things like a banana or a tomato or dust as being as an allergen is because it's overreacting. In the same way that you'll have a bad day where you woke up on the wrong side of the bed and everything is pissing you off and everyone in traffic is an asshole and your best friend is a douchebag, the same way your body is overreacting to natural, regular, healthy foods.

When inflammation levels are high, this is called chronic inflammation. If you stub your toe or get a cut on your arm, that is known as acute inflammation and that is a very healthy thing. Acute inflammation gets in, solves the problem and then gets out. So you'll see your skin gets red when you get cut or scratched- that's inflammation. That's acute inflammation and it's very healthy. It's a very quick process.

Chronic inflammation on the other hand is the complete opposite and that is what happens when he body is in a hyper-inflamed state for long periods of time and this is when your body freaks out and has it's bad days all the time.
